Activated Alumina is a form of Aluminium Oxide that is very porous and
bonds with certain liquid and gases without its chemical or physical
form changing, Due to its high porosity, it has a high ratio of surface
area to weight, it is commonly used as a desiccant, for water
treatment, and as a catalyst in natura l gas and refining operations.
It can also adsorb other materials such as ars enic,fluoride,copper,and
lead,This ability makes it a suitable candidate for use in water
treatment operations. In many cases, it is more cost-effective than a
cutting-edge, large-scale water treatment facility. Activated alumina
water treatment is often the method of choice for rural areas and small
municipal facilities.
Activated alumina is manufactured from aluminium hydroxide by
dehydroxylating it in a way that produces a highly porous material;
this material can have a surface area significantly over 200 square
metres/g. The compound is used as a desiccant (to keep things dry by
absorbing water from the air) and as a filter of fluoride, ars enic and
seleniu m in drinking water. It is made of aluminium oxide (alumina;
Al2O3), the same chemical substance as sapphire and ruby (but without
the impurities that give those gems their color). It has a very high
surface-area-to-weight ratio, due to the many "tunnel like" pores that
it has.
